Notes from the frozen tundra

Hello blog buddies! It’s been a few days since I finished the 30 for 30 challenge, and a few days since my last post. In case you were worried, don’t be… I have been wearing clothes, and I do plan on continuing this blog even now that the 30 days are up. I took Friday off, Saturday was super busy, then Sunday it got so freaking cold here in Georgia that I’ve been cocooned in blankets by the fireplace for three days. Seriously, the high yesterday was in the 20’s, with windchill of 5. 5 degrees! I know that some of you in colder climates may think that’s nothing, but see, here’s the thing: I purposefully live in a place that shouldn’t get this cold!! I can’t do cute when I’m this cold.

I have to admit, I did hug my clothes on Friday morning. Not just the ones I was going to wear… imagine a big bear hug of my entire closet. There were so many dresses, so many colors! I’m still planning on doing a big closet purge this week (it’s on my calendar) but for now I’m just enjoying the freedom to wear whatever I want… or not wear anything. My dog misses the time out in the yard while I took my pics, she gets all excited whenever I touch my camera. Maybe tomorrow I will brave the tundra for an outfit post… or maybe not.

Also on my calendar for this week: finish writing up my new business plan for The Fainting Goat; finalize my list of things to do in 2011; and work more on setting up my studio/office. I realize that I really need an office now (not just my couch), so I’m working on getting one of my extra bedrooms converted into a supply room/studio and the other into a home office. These are all lofty goals for me… wish me luck!

Elizabeth, Full of Grace // Remix 30 (!!!!)

Dress: ??, can't remember; shirt, shoes, and I think tights: Target.

Well folks, this is it. My final remix for Kendi’s 30 for 30 Challenge! I’ll share a summary of all 30 outfits plus some lessons I’ve learned during this adventure later, for now let’s give this outfit the attention she deserves!

I’ve resolved some minor heating issues in my house (hello, just shut all the doors!), so my new toasty mid-50’s temps in my bedroom caused me to be a little adventurous in my outfit planning today. I wanted to wear this dress without the shirt under, but then I remembered that it is still just barely above freezing outside, where I would be taking the pictures, so I added the under layer as a compromise with my struggling immune system. Hopefully, the shine in the tights help combat being mistaken for wearing a onesie or a unitard.

I honestly feel like this outfit is missing something, but I couldn’t figure out what. A belt would mess with the flow of the dress. A necklace would compete with the detailing on the bodice. Any suggestions??

I survived being outside a little longer today than I did yesterday, but still only got a handful of useable shots. I decided to experiment with some of the not-so-great ones, trying out different effects. I like this one above a lot. The original image was great but over exposed. Hooray for digital cameras!

Look at that, a natural looking smile!! Well, it’s because I was laughing… at myself, falling down. Three inch heels, soft ground, tree roots, a self timer and my natural grace do not mix well. I took this picture just to check the lighting in this spot (hence the coat still on), but it turned out to be one of the better shots today. Why do I always look my most graceful when I am falling down?! For example:

I’ve really enjoyed this challenge, but I can’t wait to wear something else tomorrow! Or maybe I’ll just stay in my pjs all day, and not feel at all guilty!

Baby, It’s Just Cold // Remix 29

Remember yesterday when I told you all that almost all of my 30 items were in a pile in my laundry room, waiting to be washed? Well, guess what I didn’t get around to doing yesterday. Go ahead and guess.

To make things worse, when I went to finally do laundry this morning, I only had enough detergent for one load. Which of course I discovered after adding a bunch of towels and sheets to the machine, and none of my 30 items. We’re in the home stretch here though, and I wasn’t about to be defeated this close to the finish line. Luckily, I found a few clean pieces when I folded the load of laundry that’s been in the drier all week. The only re-worn item in today’s mix are the jeans… and that’s OK in my book since its best to wear them a few times between washes anyway.

I don’t know if I’ve mentioned it yet, but it’s really cold this week. I didn’t want to wear a coat over this outfit in my pics, so I tried to brave the cold. I managed to make it for six shots. Six. Two of the six were totally out of focus. The one that I took without the scarf? I apparently misjudged the timer, because I’m about a foot away from the camera in that one. So here are the three images that I managed to get where you can actually see the outfit. Good news is that I hear it may be up in the low 40’s tomorrow, just in time for my FINAL REMIX!!

The Best Things in Life are Free// Remix 28

Shirt, sweater, shoes: Target; dress: vintage.

Day 28!! I woke up this morning thinking, I only have 3 more outfits to make!! Then I looked in my closet and noticed that it was empty. At least, the section where all of my 30 for 30 items were hanging was empty, except for a sweater and a denim jacket. My other 28 items were strewn around my bedroom and bathroom, some clean, some dirty, some questionable. Since I’ve really enjoyed mixing this dress so far, and it was clean and near the top of the pile, I decided to work it again.

I was given this brown shirt as a birthday present several years ago, and I can’t tell you how much I love it. Actually, I’m not sure if I was given it or not… I may have been given another shirt that I took back and exchanged for this one. Either way, it was free to me and I have loved wearing it for years! I mix it with teal and off-white a lot.

I wish I could remember the name of the store where I bought this necklace, I would love to share it with you. I bought it to wear in a belly dancing exhibition I was in last year. Note: I am in no way a professional belly dancer! I took classes for about a year or so. I still go occasionally, but since I don’t work in the same part of town anymore I’m not nearly as dedicated as I was.

In the spirit of full disclosure, I’m switching my shoes up today. I wore these clogs to meet a friend for coffee this morning and to take these pics, but now I’m wearing my brown boots. I had to chase my cat around the yard again a bit and the heels just weren’t cutting it. They actually really make my ankle hurt… I may have to pass them on too. It will be interesting to see what of my 30 makes it back into my closet after this challenge ends!

Reality Bites… well, kinda. // Remix 27

Plaid shirt: H&M; Coat, purple tunic, boots: Target; Jeans: thrifted Abercrombie & Fitch; hat & gloves: Ross.

Today I decided to channel my inner 90’s-angst ridden- alternative hippie- child. Either that or my inner hobo. Knit cap, plaid shirt, black boots (too bad they’re not Docs), “leather” jacket… where am I, Seattle, circa 1992? As soon as I looked at myself in the mirror I started singing My Sharona in my head, and haven’t stopped since! I love, love, love Reality Bites. One of my top 10 favorites, I believe. That’s the one movie that takes me right back to high school every time I see it. (I know it’s about recent college grads, but I saw in for the first 100 times while I was in high school… yes, I said 100.)

I’ve never worn these jeans rolled up before. I didn’t think I would like it, but I kinda do. Another remix first!!

Not only is this grunge-throwback stylish, it is also functional. As soon as I finished taking these, I went riding around in the woods with my dad, cutting firewood. Well, he cut, I gathered. Not something I could have done in a dress and heels, so good thing I had another jeans combo in my arsenal.

I’ve been in a bit of a funk lately. Not exactly sure why, but I’ve got a few ideas. It comes and goes with lightening speed. I think it has a lot to do with growing up and having to take ownership of my own life, my own decisions. Reality bites… but sometimes it also gives up the push we need to make the changes that we need to make.

On a happier note, I finally got a good fake smiling picture! This is especially miraculous today, because I somehow managed to not even be in 1/3 of the shots I took. Seriously, a third! But here it is:
